Smart Shot Coach Review: Can AI Replace a Human Shooting Coach?
Jul 09, 2026Here's the deal. Everyone keeps saying AI is coming for every job out there, so we decided to find out if it's coming for the shooting coaches as well. We took the Shot Tracker equipped with the Smart Shot Coach out to the trap range with two very different shooters and let it do the coaching. What we found surprised us.

Shot Tracker Smart Shot Coach
We have covered the Shot Tracker before, but it just picked up a new feature, and it is an intriguing one. The Smart Shot Coach reads every shot you take and gives you instant feedback on your technique. No coach standing behind you required.
It tells you where your pattern landed relative to the clay, then diagnoses what your body did to put it there. Too late, too early, too fast, it flags all of it in the moment.
- Instant feedback: Audible callouts on the range, shot by shot
- Pattern read: Tells you where your shot center hit relative to the clay
- Error diagnosis: Flags late start, early start, fast swing, and gun whip
- Correction tips: Suggest where to center your muzzle for the next shot
- Adjustable sensitivity: Low, medium, and high to dial in how critical it gets
- Cloud review: Every shot syncs up so you can go back and study it later
- Coach and athlete accounts: Coaches can review a shooter's whole session, even remotely
How the Smart Shot Coach Works
The best way to explain it is to just tell you what it said. On a good shot, it came back with something like "minor fast swing at 30 yards, good technique." On a rough one, it called "moderate late start, you're reacting too late to the appearance of the clay."
Then it goes a step further and hands you a potential fix.
Here's the part we really liked. Even when it flagged a pattern as high and to the right, the birds were still breaking. It wasn't saying we missed. It was telling us the center of our pattern was off, which is exactly the kind of honest, specific feedback that actually makes you better.
Putting It to the Test
We didn't want to just talk about it, so we brought in two shooters on opposite ends of the experience scale. Rylan, my son, has been shooting trap for about three years. Cass is new to the game of trap, though no stranger to the outdoors.
The plan was simple. Each of them shot a round with nothing but the Smart Shot Coach as their guide. No tips from me until the round was over.
What jumped out right away is that the kids didn't make nearly as many errors as I expected. The tool kept them honest, and it kept me honest too as the coach watching it all unfold.
Into the Cloud
This is where it got exciting for me. Every shot we took on the range went straight to the cloud, and that changes what a coach can do.
Athletes get their own accounts, and the coach gets an account that pulls in all of their data. I can sit down after the fact and diagnose what a shooter is doing, even if they ran the session on their own miles away.
Going back through Rylan's round, we flagged one shot for a fast swing. The tool caught it, but the cloud let me dig into why. His eyes hadn't picked up the clay early enough, so his brain played catch-up and he had to rip the gun to get there.
Cass's round told a similar story. It flagged some recoil control early, then some gun whip, and cranking the sensitivity up showed his gun starting to move before the clay ever came out. That is a focus and eye-position thing, and now we know exactly what to work on next time.
Can AI Replace a Human Coach?
So I did what any coach would do. I went out and made mistakes on purpose to see if it would catch me.
I stared at my bead to force a late start, and it called "moderate late start." I anticipated the clay to force an early move, and it flagged "moderate early start" with the little wiggle to match. It caught every one.
Here's my honest take. I don't think this tool is trying to replace a human coach at all. The real power shows up when you pair it with a coach who can pull the data, sit down with the shooter, and turn all those flags into a plan.
Final Thoughts
We are utterly impressed with what the Shot Tracker and the Smart Shot Coach can do, and honestly, we're excited about where this thing is headed.
It won't magically fix your shooting, but as a set of eyes that never blinks and never sugarcoats, it earns its spot in the bag. If you want to check it out for yourself, we've got a link for you: Shot Tracker.
