The Beretta 688 Performance Sporting is built to crush clays straight out of the box
The Beretta 688 Performance Sporting B-Fast is built to crush clays straight out of the box — and at $3,699, it might just be the best value sporting shotgun under $4k. But how does it stack up against the trusted 686 and the higher-end 694? Let’s break it down.

Ergonomics
The 688 stands out with its birch laminate stock — a denser, stronger alternative to walnut that adds heft and stability. The grip features a right-hand palm swell (with left-hand versions available), comfortable laser checkering, and an adjustable trigger shoe for reach. Stippling on top of the receiver reduces glare, while the tapered 10mm–8mm rib, mid bead, and ivory front bead make for a clean sight picture. Overall, the gun feels modern, balanced, and ready for competition.
Recoil and Reliability
Recoil is manageable — smooth for a sporting gun, but it could be reduced by adding extra weight. Out of the box, the balance leans slightly rearward, but this is totally customizable by adding weights (not included). Adjusting the comb or adding weight can transform this from really good to great. As an over/under, reliability is largely a non-issue; Beretta’s proven action and locking system inspire confidence.
Want even less recoil? We love the FalconStrike recoil reduction systems.
Breakdown / Quality of Build
The 688 shares DNA with Beretta’s 686 and 694, but adds more heft than the 686 thanks to its thicker receiver and laminate stock. The conical locking lugs, clean machining, and classic Beretta build quality are all here. Compared to the 686, the 688 feels more competition-oriented; compared to the 694, it’s a more affordable entry point with many of the same features.
Shooting Experience
On the range, the 688 swings smoothly. Adjustable comb and weights help fine-tune fit and movement. Triggers are crisp, though the upper and lower barrels differ slightly in pull weight (3 lb. 13 oz. vs. 4 lb. 11 oz.). Overall, it’s an enjoyable shotgun to shoot and inspires confidence in sporting clays.
Final Thoughts
The Beretta 688 Performance Sporting hits a sweet spot for shooters who want a ready-to-compete sporting over/under without climbing into $5k+ territory. While purists may prefer high-grade walnut, the laminate stock offers strength and value. Between the adjustable comb, crisp triggers, and customizable balance, this is a lot of shotgun for the money — and one that can absolutely break clays all day.
