Zoli XL Evo Review

The Zoli XL Evo isn’t just another break-action — it’s a clay crusher with a twist. With interchangeable side plates to fine-tune balance and a rock-solid build, this shotgun begs the question: does it shoot as good as it looks? Let’s find out.

Zoli XL Evo

The Zoli XL Evo is designed as a versatile competition shotgun for clays — sporting, trap, or skeet. What makes it stand out is the ability to swap side plates on the receiver, adding or removing weight to change the gun’s balance. It’s a high-quality Italian build with customization in mind, positioned as a “mid-tier” competition model at around $12,500. The question is, does it perform as well as it promises?

  • MSRP: $12,500 (approx.)
  • Available Gauges: 12, 20, 28
  • Barrel Length Options: Multiple (flat rib, stepped rib, vented or non-vented side ribs available)

  • Weight: ~8 lbs 8.7 oz (varies with side plates)
  • Length of Pull: 14 ¾" (adjustable comb)
  • Trigger: Coil-spring dropout, adjustable blade
  • Shims/Comb: Adjustable comb included
  • Chokes: 5 screw-in chokes (Light Mod, Light Mod, Mod, Improved Mod, Improved Cylinder)
  • Extras: Interchangeable side plates for custom balance, titanium-nitride coated trigger components

Ergonomics

In the hands, the XL Evo feels solid and premium. I noticed right away that the balance point can be shifted by changing the side plates, which affects how the gun swings. The stepped rib and lack of side ribs made the barrel feel a little lighter up front. Fine checkering and a rounded forend give a consistent feel no matter how you grip it. The adjustable comb and trigger blade help dial in fit.

Recoil and Reliability

The XL Evo had more “pop” than I expected — not unmanageable, but sharper than the Z-Sport Greystone I tested previously, despite similar weight. Stock fit and balance play into that. Adding a FalconStrike recoil pad could make a big difference. As for reliability, Zoli’s reputation and robust Boss-style locking system suggest long-term durability, though I didn’t put high round counts through it during this review.

Want even less recoil? We love the FalconStrike recoil reduction systems.

Breakdown / Quality of Build

Zoli builds these guns to a high standard. The Boss-style locking system, smooth tolerances, and silver-soldered barrels show top-tier craftsmanship. The interchangeable side plates aren’t a gimmick — they allow you to truly tune the feel of the gun. Internal trigger parts are titanium nitride coated, and the dropout trigger design makes maintenance easy.

Shooting Experience

On the range, Steve broke clays clean but admitted the recoil felt punchier than expected. The bottom barrel trigger was crisp at ~3 lbs, while the top broke closer to 4 lbs — both solid, with the bottom feeling especially good. Versatility is the Evo’s theme: whether sporting, trap, or skeet, you can configure barrel length, ribs, side ribs, and balance. With more time under the gun, I believe it could be “absolutely dynamite” if tailored to fit me better.

Final Thoughts

The Zoli XL Evo is a premium, customizable break-action built for shooters who want to fine-tune balance and feel. It shoots well, looks sharp, and offers features you won’t find on most models. For serious clay shooters who value adjustability, it’s definitely worth a look.
